UNC lab manager takes extra steps to divert waste

Elaine Wauthier is a Research Analyst in the department of Cell Biology and Physiology.

As manager and researcher in Lola Reid’s lab in the Department of Cell Biology and Physiology, Elaine has been working to recycle and reduce waste whenever possible. She keeps this in mind when designing protocols by identifying situations when it is appropriate to use the same tools for multiple steps, and also by choosing tools whose production causes less harm to the environment. Although sterile conditions in the lab often prevent reuse of items, many are recyclable after being properly washed, such as the plastic containers for cell culture media.

Elaine has arranged to add a collection bin for plastic film to the Glaxo Research Building’s recycling services, because many of the lab’s supplies arrive wrapped in plastic film, and she frequently collects the lab’s used batteries and electronics to be dropped off at appropriate facilities. She patiently educates new members of the lab in these methods, and her consistent efforts over the years have made a very positive difference.
